The chalazion is a cyst in the eyelid. It is also called meibomian gland lipogranuloma. The inflammation is caused by the blocked meibomian gland which causes inflammation in the upper eyelid. Chalazion is usually inflammation of the lid of the margin of the eye. This disease is more commonly seen in adults between the age group of 30-50 years. It is equally found in men and women. Chalazion disease is alternative called as meibomian cyst, conjunctival granuloma, and tarsal cyst.

The lump of chalazion can be caused due to blocking of the oil gland of the eye. These oil glands secrete the oil into the tears and blocking one of these causes visible lump called chalazion. The main causes can be poor lid hygiene, acne rosacea, chronic blepharitis, high blood lipid concentrations can also lead to this disease. There may be Tuberculosis or immunodeficiency and some kinds of viral infection as well. This disease is also caused due to carcinoma. Leishmaniasis and chronic blepharitis also cause Chalazia.

The acute infection can be treated by topical antibiotics eye drops or ointment. Most of the time, the inflammation and other symptoms may vanish within few months to two years.
The inflammation may be surgically removed in case of larger lesions and corticosteroid is used for small treating smaller Chalazion.
