Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca
Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca (KCS) is the other name for dry eyes. It is also known as Keratitis sicca, sicca syndrome, xerophthalmia and dry eye syndrome (DES). This disease of eye is caused due to the decreased production of the tears or else due to the increased tear film evaporation. This disease is commonly seen in human beings and also found in animals, though not all.

There are three layers of tear glands, which produce tears. Any damage to any of these layers will result in diminished production of the tears and lead to symptoms of keratitis sicca. Other than that aging is said to be one of the main reasons for dry eyes. The thermal or chemical burns of the eyes may also lead to this disease. In certain cases adenovirus also causes this disease. Diabetics is also said to be one of the important reasons for this disease.

The patient with keratoconjunctivitis complains of the following symptoms namely:-
- The patient experiences dryness of the eyes.
- Due to it, there is burning sensation and sandy-gritty eye irritation.
- This eye irritation gets worse with the day.
- The patient may experience tired eyes, and may develop a tendency of scratching the eyes always due to the dryness.
- Due to the constant irritation there is pain and redness in the eyes.
- The patient may also feel pressure behind the eyes and pulling sensation in the eyes.
- All these eventually lead to damage to the eye surface.
- There is an increased sensitivity to the bright lights.
- The damage occurs in both eyes.
- Some patients also complain of stringy discharge from the eyes.
